California Games is one of those NES titles that is often regarded as a hidden gem for the console. Truth be told, there are things about this game people will really like, and things that are just downright annoying, hence why I didn't give this game a perfect score. I play this game by putting in the names of my friends and playing every event, to really get a true feel for the game, even though that can get quite tiresome after a while. Some events are a lot of fun, especially the BMX level. Other levels, like the skating, skateboarding, and frisbee levels, are frustrating and annoying. Then you have your middle ground levels, the surfing and footbag levels, that while fun, are almost too easy. This game doesn't have high replay value, once you've played it a few times, unless you truly enjoy it, or have a lot of friends over to play it with you, is only good in small doses. Still, it was an inventive game for the time and overall still holds up well. |
