One of the best Christmas presents ever.
I got this game for Christmas in I believe 1991. It's definitely one of those titles where you'd have no idea what you were doing if you didn't read the manual. The game itself provides no background.
In short you play as Victar, a young man armed with a broken sword and an unlimited supply of shurakin. Your mission is to find the three lost fragments of your sword before taking on the demon that's been terrorizing the land. Each sword fragment can be found in one of the game's first three levels, guarded by a powerful minion of the Dark Fiend. Each level, the one exception being the final level of the game, is divided into two stages. Each stage has its own set of challenges and its own boss. As you travel you'll collect keys, needed to unlock gates, and various other powerups. The ates willlead to oneof two possible realms, the Dungeon Realm, where you'll fight a miniboss in order to escape, and the Mystic Realm, where you'll find various secondary weapons, anything from a powerful lightning bolt to an energy beam that canwastemost bosses andminibossesin two strikes. Even powerups dropped by normal enemies aren't entirely useless. My favorite is the inaccurately named Arrow Beam, which not only makesVIctarinvincible for a short time but also transforms him into three of himself.
My favorite aspect of the game is its music. It certainly gets the job wel-done. The sound effects, while nothing spectacular, also work well. My favorite themes are the Arrow Beam theme, the final level theme and the ending.
Overall this is definitely a game worth at least checking out. It's definitely one of the better titles from Taito.
