Contra Shattered Soldier

It seems like the Contra games during the ps era were average at best but this one was actually very good. The gameplay is reminiscent of Contra 3 so that means alot crap coming at you and one hit deaths. The kicker to this game is that lance your partner in the original Contra is the bad guy in this one. You play with Bill the other guy from the original one to thwart Lance's plot. I definitely would recommend this game if you're a Contra fan.

Before i say anything else, i have to mention that the 3-star rating is in no way a reflection of the gameplay at all. This is a really solid Contra game and it improves upon everything the original ones lacked, most notably how you can lock your firing direction and run at the same time, which is a really nice feature i felt Contra and Super C always needed (i never played the ones on SNES, so i'm not sure if those games already had that, but it feels so good to use). You also have 3 different weapons (all with unlimited ammo) and each one comes in handy for different applications. The actual game aside, i have to bring up why i gave this 3 stars...buyer beware, copies of this game are printed on the dreaded "blue-back" disc type, unlike your typical silver-back ones. Blue-back discs are much harder to read in your PS2 and are far more likely to become unreadable, as my copy of the game has become. When i first got the game, it took me about 10 minutes to actually get it to work, mostly through trial-and-error luck because i kept getting the "disc read error" message when i put the disc in. After playing the game once and getting through a fair amount of the beginning part, i decided to take a break and come back to it later but i never did because, needless to say, i haven't gotten it to work since then. It's a shame since i was really impressed with the gameplay, but the given circumstances really frustrated me. Contra rules, Lukie games rules, blue-back game discs don't!

This is a cool action packed game, with familiar Contra controls and fast-paced action. The enemies are crazy and you're vulnerable as... As a soldier can be against anything. So 1 shot and you're down. But that's the charm of the game, you have to master it to beat it. It's challenging and fun!

This game has a monster of a soundtrack. If you're a metal head, you will love it. The graphics are awesome and the gameplay follows close. It's a great addition to the Contra series.
