No Guts, No Galaxy
What can I say about MechWarrior 2? It's a game that I played non-stop on the PC and that I eventually collected on both the PlayStation and Sega Saturn systems. Fortunately for the Saturn version of the game, it plays close enough to the original PC release that after a small adjustment period (getting familiar with controls and such), it'll be just like riding a bicycle. This is both a good thing and a bad thing. It's a good thing because the heart and soul of the game and franchise is totally intact. It's a bad thing because the difficulty is maddening at times - as it should be - and the Saturn's controllers aren't easily replaceable when you throw them across the room because you selected 'Instant Action' with a 'Fire Moth' BattleMech and the first wave of enemies you have to defeat is a Star of Warhawks all armed with PPCs and ignoring the rules of zellbrigen. This game is also fairly short. There are 48 Missions in all - 16 of which were specifically designed for the console versions - but many of them amount to "Go Here, Destroy X" with a little bit of 'Mech-vs-'Mech combat in the middle. There are even a couple of missions where you can totally bypass the enemy combatants altogether - but where's the fun in that? - by utilizing a Scout 'Mech, running directly to the objective, and destroying it long before the opponents can get within firing range. It actually kind of makes for an entertaining challenge for those who want to amp up the difficulty rating by a factor of forty.
The only problem I had with this game is that I ordered a 'Complete' copy and the one I received was far from Complete. The included Manual was gutted - leaving only the cover of the book. The case was broken and the CD itself was absolutely covered by a CD Shield sticker that cannot be removed without destroying the CD's artwork. I alerted Lukiegames' Customer Service about these problems and those wonderful guys and girls immediately went about fixing my issue. As always, I will continue to refer people to the gang at Lukiegames for all of their collecting purposes.
