One of the few aerial dogfighting games that focuses on the WW2 era, S.W.O.N. puts you in the pilot's seat as an American fighting with a secret British squadron called the Battlehawks. The rundown of the game is that you are undermining the enemy and sabotaging their progress in the war. Whether it be by blowing up research facilities or destroying airfields, your job is to neutralize any threat. It has a more arcade feel than a simulator, but it is still a good history-based game. Controls are solid and gameplay can be a bit rough. I don't know whether or not this game had a dynamic difficulty feature, but I swear that some missions are far harder than others. I used to own another copy of the game before losing it. I do not remember this game being so hard to beat. It is not an easy game to beat by any means. The AI is very tough and if you are not careful, you will find yourself in a ball of fire. The game features quite a number of planes: from basic WW2 fighters such as the Hurricane and Spitfire, to experimental craft such as the Komet, Me-262, etc. It even features experimental weaponry from guided rockets, guided torpedoes, etc. Saying that this game is diverse in terms of playable units is a bit of an understatement. There are plenty of times that this game will have you on the edge of your seat, trying to get that last kill to settle a bet with a friendly squadron or to inch closer to an enemy you have been tailing for a while. A few nice features include the ability to speed up and slow down time, challenges (side missions that reward upgrade points and planes), and plenty of secondary objectives. There are even times where you are offered the chance to steal enemy planes from captured airfields. Said planes can be used later in your campaign if you wish. Not an easy game, but definitely satisfying to play and has lots of features to tinker with.
